The birds are chirping, the flowers are starting to bloom and there’s a touch of warmth in the air. It’s official: spring is upon us! And with the new season comes the perfect opportunity to sample some of the best white wine on the market at the moment.

At The Meat & Wine Co, we’re happy to report that our white wine list includes some of the best wines in Australia. Try these five spring-ready whites and we’re sure you’ll agree.

1/ 2017 Frogmore Creek Riesling

Hailing from the Coal River Valley in Southern Tasmania, the 2017 Frogmore Creek Riesling boasts fresh and floral aromas dominated by honeysuckle and finished with the crisp and zippy flavours of mandarin and nectarine. The palate has well balanced sugar and acid with fresh lime flavours, making this white a perfect pairing with spicy dishes.

Try it at The Meat & Wine Co with: Salmon with fermented chilli, miso, sesame, soy, scallions, ginger and garlic.

2/ 2017 Domaine William Fevre ‘Petit Chablis’ Chardonnay

The ‘Petit Chablis’ is the perfect introduction to the fine wines of the Chablis wine region in France. The cool climate of the region produces wines with deeper acidity than Chardonnay wines grown in warmer climates. This particular variety emanates lightly fruity and floral bouquets that are marked by distinct mineral notes and great freshness. The Hazelnut aromas and earthy tones of hay, seaweed and bark give this wine a distinct depth of flavour.

Try it at The Meat & Wine Co with: Fresh oysters finished with lemon granita.

3/ 2017 Over and Under Pinot Gris

The King Valley in Victoria’s alpine north east is one of Australia’s most promising wine regions. Long, sunny Autumn days lead into cooling afternoon breezes to create the ideal conditions for white wines with a rich depth of flavour balanced by fine acidity. The 2017 Over and Under Pinot Gris exemplifies the region’s produce with excellent texture and acidity rounded out with aromas of ripe pear, rockmelon and vanilla yogurt.

Try it at The Meat & Wine Co with: Marinated chicken breast with white barley, porcini mushroom sauce, rocket, salsa verde and red wine jus.

4/ 2018 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc

Widely regarded as the best example of Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough Region, Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc is always one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year. The 2018 doesn’t fail to deliver, showcasing a generous palate of ripe citrus, stone fruit and lemongrass flavours balanced by crunchy acidity, and bursting with lime and grapefruit aromas.

Try it at The Meat & Wine Co with: Our signature cheese platter, featuring Woombye Triple Cream Truffle Brie, Berry’s Creek Tarwin Blue and Jack’s English Club Cheddar served with conserve and assorted crackers.

5/ 2017 Cape Barren ‘Funky Goose’ Gruner Veltliner

If you’re looking for a new white variety to try this spring, give the Gruner Veltliner a pour. Originally hailing from Austria, the Gruner Veltliner is similar to Riesling but with a little more richness and a distinctively peppery aroma. The Cape Barren ‘Funky Goose’ Gruner Veltliner originates from the cool-climate Adelaide Hills region, giving this white delicate floral notes backed by the freshness of Nashi pear, white nectarine and warm, white pepper spice.

Try it at The Meat & Wine Co with: Garlic, ginger and coriander marinated king prawns.
